Compagnia del Piagnaro in Pontremoli is a historical group founded in 2005 and is a non-profit, non-partisan association dedicated to promoting amateur, recreational, and cultural sports activities.
It is composed of individuals, legal entities, and/or autonomous associations regularly established, as well as public and private entities.
The group is dedicated to the valorisation of the history of the Pontremoli region through the reconstruction and affirmation of the historical and cultural memory of the city and its inhabitants.
To perpetuate historical, cultural, folkloric, and sporting traditions over time.
To forge bonds of fraternity and friendship through ancient traditions.
To develop relationships and exchanges among groups during historical, cultural, folkloric, and amateur sporting events, also collaborating with public or private organisations, associations, and entities.
To promote ancient mediaeval traditions in schools.
To collaborate with similar historical and cultural associations, join, affiliate, and/or enter into agreements and contracts with federations, national and international organisations pursuing similar aims.
To organise events to direct leisure time towards cultural, recreational, social, and sporting purposes; to manage and use the "Mediaevalis"® trademark.
To support and promote social aggregation activities among individual members and cardholders; this aim holds an absolute priority as a fundamental principle inspiring and originating historical organisations.
The Compagnia del Piagnaro's banner features the Piagnaro castle, a symbol of mediaeval Pontremoli from which our group derives its name; the imperial eagle of Frederick II, with whom the city had a love-hate relationship; and the crusader shield, symbol of the free communes of northern Italy. The colours are ochre yellow and dark red, the same colours used for our costumes.
This work was created by the Pontremoli artist Giancarlo Bertocchi, a professional painter who worked mainly in Milan and Pontremoli, creating numerous murals in Piedmont and participating in both collective and solo exhibitions throughout northern Italy and abroad.
The distinguishing colours of the Historical Group "Compagnia del Piagnaro" are:
yellow, red, and black.
The flag depicts in the upper left corner:
• a shield containing three 'fields';
• Cortina with three towers, called Cacciaguerra, which Castruccio Castracani degli Antelminelli erected in Pontremoli in 1322 to divide the Guelph and Ghibelline factions;
• a red cross on a white background, a symbol of the 'free commune' autonomy recognised in Pontremoli by the emperors Frederick I Barbarossa and Frederick II;
• a rampant dog, the coat of arms of Castruccio Castracani degli Antelminelli.
In the lower right corner;
• Coat of arms of Pontremoli
