Every year in August, live with us
In the heart of summer, in August, the town of Pontremoli, nestled among the picturesque hills of Tuscany, transforms into a true portal to the past. This enchanting annual event, known as Medievalis, celebrates a fundamental part of Pontremoli's history: the granting of the diploma of Free Municipality by Emperor Frederick II in the distant year 1226. This imperial recognition placed Pontremoli at the center of communication routes between Lombardy and Tuscany, bestowing upon it a role of paramount importance in the mediaeval context as the 'key and door.'
During the five days of Medievalis, the city sheds its modern appearance to fully embrace the atmosphere of yesteryears. The streets of the historic centre are closed to automobile traffic, making way for pedestrians, merchants, carriages, and knights. It's as if a spell transports us back in time, catapulting us directly into the Middle Ages.
One of the most fascinating aspects of Medievalis is the presence of numerous protagonists: actors, archers, dancers, musicians, armigers, and more, who truly embody various mediaeval social classes. Here you can meet the clergy, with monks and friars; the nobility, with noble lords and elegant ladies; the military, represented by valiant knights in armour; the courtiers, with poets and artists; and finally, the peasants, who immerse you in the rural life of those distant times. Each character is carefully and precisely dressed, making the experience even more engaging and authentic.
