In the 12th – 13th centuries, formations of archers were able to unleash thousands of arrows within moments; each archer could shoot up to ten to twelve arrows per minute. Unable to afford a horse, servants, and armour (luxuries reserved for the more or less affluent nobility), they equipped themselves as best they could. In addition to the bow and arrows, they armed themselves with daggers or axes in case they needed to engage the enemy in close combat.
In Italy during the medieval period, the bow, made of yew wood, was curved at the ends to achieve greater speed and energy without overly burdening the effort required to shoot the arrow.
Our archers showcase their skills during historical re-enactments in archery contests and shooting demonstrations. In the medieval era, society was divided into three parts: the "Oratores" or clergy, the "Laboratores" encompassing those who worked, and the "Bellatores," the men at arms!
